Anal Gland Removal (Anal Sacculectomy) at Foxwell Vet Coomera

At Foxwell Vet Coomera, we offer surgical anal gland removal (anal sacculectomy) for pets suffering from chronic anal gland issues. This procedure can bring lasting relief to dogs who experience ongoing discomfort, infection, or impaction.

What Are Anal Glands?

The illustration below shows the location and anatomy of the anal glands. The gland on the right demonstrates inflammation and abnormal swelling, a common issue in dogs suffering from chronic impaction or infection.

Foxwell Vet Coomera - Anal Glands
Anal glands (or anal sacs) are small paired glands located just inside your dog’s anus. These glands naturally empty during defecation and produce a scent unique to each animal.

In some dogs, these glands can become impacted, infected, or even develop abscesses or tumors. Chronic problems can cause significant pain and frustration for pets and their owners.

Signs Your Dog May Need Anal Gland Removal

  • Scooting or dragging bottom
  • Excessive licking or biting at the anus
  • Recurrent infections or abscesses
  • Foul-smelling discharge
  • Swelling near the rectum
  • Difficulty passing stool
  • Behavioural changes due to discomfort

When is Surgery Recommended?

Surgical removal of the anal glands is considered when:

  • There are recurrent infections or abscesses
  • The anal glands have formed chronic fistulas or scar tissue
  • The pet has anal gland tumors
  • Medical management (manual expression, antibiotics, diet changes) has not resolved the issue

About the Procedure

Anal sacculectomy is a delicate procedure where one or both anal glands are surgically removed under general anaesthesia. It is usually performed as a day procedure.

Post-surgical care includes:

  • Pain relief
  • Antibiotics
  • Wound monitoring
  • Activity restriction for 10–14 days

Most pets recover well and are significantly more comfortable after healing.

Risks and Considerations

As with any surgery, there are potential risks, including:

  • Temporary or (rarely) permanent changes to bowel control
  • Swelling or wound infection
  • Seroma (fluid accumulation)
  • Need for additional wound care

At Foxwell Vet, we perform this procedure with careful attention to detail to minimise risks and support your pet’s smooth recovery.
